Hawkins Electric Services Poised for Second Century in Business

Electrical Contractor Credits Its Business Model for Powering 100 Years of Growth.

Laurel, Md. — February 27, 2018 — Hawkins Electric Services, Inc., the award-winning family-owned regional electrical contracting firm that helped pioneer the introduction of electrical service in the Washington, D.C. area, announces that it is celebrating its 100th year in business in 2018.

In 1918, at a time when fewer than 35 percent of U.S. homes had electricity, Jay C. “Pop” Hawkins saw an opportunity. Capitalizing on his knack for electrical wiring, Hawkins started riding his bicycle through his hometown of Riverdale, Maryland to install and repair electrical wiring. He built a reputation for treating people like he wanted to be treated and for doing every job right. “Pop” Hawkins laid a foundation and set the business model for an electrical services firm that is still thriving a century later.

Today, brothers Eric Shatzer and Todd Shatzer are second-generation owners and leaders of Hawkins Electric, which was acquired by their father, a longtime Hawkins employee, in the 1970s. Hawkins Electric has grown to be a leading regional commercial and residential electrical contractor known for its award-winning work on multifamily electrical construction projects. The company’s expansion strategy over the past decade has resulted in a doubling of revenue, tripling of facility space and tripling the number of employees.

Commenting on the company’s growth, President/CEO Eric Shatzer says, “Through successive generations of leadership our company has maintained its edge in electrical service technology. Just as important, we have stayed true to our legacy core business model of providing world-class customer service and, most of all, always doing the right thing.”

Hawkins Electric is heavily involved in the region’s commercial and multifamily industry, participating and having leadership roles in such organizations as Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC), Institute of Real Estate Managers (IREM), Property Management Association (PMA), Apartment and Office Building Association (AOBA), and Maryland Multi-Housing Association (MMHA). The company has earned multiple industry awards for safety and excellence.

Says Executive Vice President Todd Shatzer, “We’ve been asked by some of our colleagues how we have stayed in business for a century. I think it’s in our corporate DNA—we hire people who share our passion for what we do and we have built and nurtured trusting relationships with our industry partners. We are confident that this business model will carry us through the next 100 years.”
